Hi friend! I hope you are well and enjoying this beautiful day that the Lord has made! Today, we are talking about figuring out your blogging niche. You may be coming from my previous post, “What Do I Blog About?” – if not, welcome to one of many blog posts dedicated to helping you get started on your blogging journey! In case you missed it, here is my blog post on how to start a blog on Bluehost. Bluehost is a great place to start and where I started my blog.
Today, we’re discussing the word “niche.” What is a niche? According to Merriam-Webster, there are several definitions. We are looking at the two that most represent what a niche is in terms of blogging.
“a place, employment, status, or activity for which a person or thing is best fitted — finally found her niche“
“d: a specialized market”
There are literally a million different topics or “niches” that occupy the blogging space. For example, we have mommy bloggers, health bloggers, wellness bloggers, politic bloggers, beauty bloggers, lifestyle bloggers, fitness bloggers, and the list goes on. There are also micro-niches that occupy the space as well. For example, instead of being a mommy blogger, there are bloggers who specialize in having twins, having children with learning disabilities, etc. It’s wonderful that we have so many amazing creative minds who provide a wealth of knowledge right from their personal blog!
When I first started my blog in December of 2018, I had no idea where to start. I figured I would start writing about my passions: faith, home, being a new mom, and lifestyle. I’m here to tell you that this is TOTALLY NORMAL and OK! You do not have to start out with a super specific niche to begin blogging. In fact, from what I’ve read, most bloggers also began with blogging about their passions and then niched-down from there.
My advice is to think about the main topics that you enjoy, are knowledgeable about and truly have a passion of sharing. Then, start to jot down potential posts for each category. Below, I have a chart as an example for those visual learners like me!
Great blog posts are engaging, helpful to the reader, contain knowledge on the subject, and your relative experience with it. Think about helping your reader get from point A to point B. We want to serve our readers in the best way possible. The more information you can provide to your reader in the subject will help you tremendously in the long run.
As a Christian, you might be wondering – can I blog about my Christian faith? ABSOLUTELY!! In fact, please do, because we need as much help as we can get spreading the GOOD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST!
Christian bloggers are most definitely needed in the blogosphere. I have many faith-filled posts here if you want to check them out (but not copy!). You’ll want to create your own, unique, content. Also, I have dedicated blog posts for how to start your blog. I am here to help!
I hope this a helpful starting point as you navigate through writing your first blog post! I have full confidence in you that you can do this! Remember, baby steps… It’s a marathon, not a sprint! Blogging takes time, effort, and consistency. I know you may want to do all the things right now. Relax, take a deep breath, and jot down your goals for your blog for the week.
